In Classic Mode, the choices of playable characters in the games are restricted to those that appeared during said games' original releases. That means for example that only Sonic is playable in Sonic the Hedgehog CD, or that only Sonic and Tails are playable in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (not counting cheats).
